The all-aluminum beverage can, also known as a two-piece can, consists of a can body and a can lid, which are manufactured on different production lines using different aluminum alloys. In fact, the can lid is composed of two components: the lid body and the pull tab-sealing sheet. They are produced using different alloys and different grades of aluminum strip on highly automated lines.

The can body is made of a 0.25-0.29mm thick Al-Mn series alloy strip, such as 3004, AA3004, AA3104, or AA3204, in the H19 temper. The can lid (lid, pull tab, etc.) is made of aluminum alloy strip. The majority of can lids are made from 5182-H19 strip, but some are made from 5052-H19 or H48 strip. Beer and carbonated beverage cans with internal pressure, as well as juice cans without internal pressure, use 5082 (or 5182) and 5052 alloy strips in the H38 temper. The lid body (base lid) is made of a thin strip of approximately 0.27mm thickness, using 5082 or 5182 alloy. The pull tab material is mostly 5052-H19, although Novelis only supplies 5182-H19 and H48 coil. The material widths are 45mm, 46mm, and 68mm. The pull tab and sealing sheet materials are mostly 5052 alloy, with occasional use of 5182 alloy. The combination of the sealing sheet and pull tab can be referred to as the pull tab.
